Rationale

Our subject was advertising a beach clean-up. We used the contrast of a beach and cleaning supplies to create a rhetoric around juxtaposition, to make the viewer look again. Our look was family-friendly, clean and fun! Our call to action was “The ocean needs a scrub down!”, talking about cleaning the beach and making changes in day-to-day life to prevent waste going into our ocean. This is explained in our website and through or take-home reusable bags. We chose bags over the flyer to minimise waste used in this project. Our combination of illustration and photography draws in the viewer with eye-catching sea creatures and reinforces the real-world effects with real imagery and cleaning supplies.

Poster + Bag Finalizations (by Sam)

Sam took some of my concepts and blended them with her own.

She also designed our 'flyer', which we chose to do as a reuseable bag so we don't create more waste.

New assets

I drew up a bunch of sea/beach creatures for Sam and I to use wherever in our iterations.

I've been making more iterations of our spray bottle poster, but also going back to our photos and seeing what other things I can do with them.

[Might use this on the website]

Second Interim Critique

Referring to these images:

- Direction of nozzle
- Spray bottle = chemicals
- Don't use too many colours - confusing

New Posters

Sam went and took some new photos based on my thumbnails, so I've been able to make new poster designs from them.

Poster Thumbnails

I've drawn up some new thumbs for Sam to reference when taking new photos. This will be done over the weekend.

In the mean time, I'm going to work on the website design and layout. Sam is going to focus on our flyer, which will be a reusable jute bag with the information printed on the two faces.

Next Monday is another interim presentation, so we've both going to work hard to get our concepts and ideas presentable for then.

Poster Inspiration

Lee suggested we go back and do some more research to get out of our rut.

More poster ideation

We're still having trouble finding a good art direction to go with our concept. We're going to do some clearer thumbnails, take some more planned photos and work with those. We're also looking at combining illustration with photography, as shown in the first example.

Next poster ideation

We decided we wanted to move away from illustration and look more at photography. We bought some beach props and set them up with cleaning supplies. These photos are just tests for the concept; we'll be taking more in better lighting.

Looking at websites: wireframes and notes.

We looked over some pre-existing websites as research before designing our own.

350.org - An environmental protection movement
[img]

Has a very welcoming look; wants to attract a wide audience. Lots of little snippets of news and information. Clearly labelled sections for further information.

NZ Opera - Advertising high class performances
[img]

More sleek and elegant; simple colour scheme (black and gold). Advertising events front and centre, followed by news in favour of their performances.

Other sites I looked at were:

MightyApe (mobile version)

SPCA (same site for mobile and desktop)

Interim notes

We went over my poster design at interim using the Thinking Hats method as a group.

Gut reaction?
  • Brush looks like whale baleen
  • Little mermaid - Disney-esque
  • Too much text, different text sizes
  • Visual and imagery flow needs works
Likes/dislikes?
  • Illustration is cute
  • Feels like an ad rather than an event
  • Colour palette is fresh and inviting
What’s not working, what might go wrong?
  • Scale/context
  • Confusing message and flow
  • Don’t like the blocks of colour and text
  • White is bland
Look at the possibilities, be radical, find new ways to do the same thing
  • Different media
  • Sand home
What content do you have/need?
  • Background
  • Lots of text, don’t need more
What is your plan of attack?
  • Change media
  • Work on visual flow

Interim Poster design

For interim, Sam and I are taking our best ideas and making a poster each for interim, then we'll decide on our direction from the critique in class.

I'm going with the beach porducts + cleaning products visuals, making it cute and colourful.

Sam did up her own idea as well:
